چکیده

A model was developed and calibrated to experimental data, to formulate a theoretical description of nitrification in bead filters. The model results were consistent with the literature, indicating that the inverse relationship between solids accumulation and nitrification is mediated by an oxygen limitation. This result was central to an explanation of why differing optimal backwash intervals in gentlyand aggressively-washed filters are related to: (1) differences in harvest fraction, which fixes the relationship between backwash interval and interstitial solids concentration and (2) differences in biofilm retention, which controls the average biomass age thereby determining total biomass concentration.

Developing Backwash Protocols for Floating-Bead Filters: A Model of Solids-Loading and Biofilm-Retention Effects on Nitrification

Maintaining effective solids capture and nitrification can determine the success or failure of a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). Although solids capture and nitrification are often performed sequentially, they are united in floating-bead filters. The use of bead filters in a RAS began at the Dworshak National Fish Hatchery (Cooley 1979). More recently, a bead filter was developed and te...

Nitrification performance of a propeller-washed bead clarifier supporting a fluidized sand biofilter in a recirculating warmwater fish system

A propeller-wash bead filter (PWBF) and a fluidized sand filter (FSF) on a 28 m recirculating system stocked with tilapia maintained favorablewater quality at five different feed rates, ranging from 0.9 to 4.5 kg feed per day. TAN removal rates ranged up to about 200 g TAN/m of media per day for each of the units. Peak rates of 244 g TAN/m of media per day were observed when the recirculating f...

Modeling of Weld Bead Geometry Using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) in Additive Manufacturing

Additive Manufacturing describes the technologies that can produce a physical model out of a computer model with a layer-by-layer production process. Additive Manufacturing technologies, as compared to traditional manufacturing methods, have the high capability of manufacturing the complex components using minimum energy and minimum consumption. These technologies have brought about the possibi...

Application of the Extreme Learning Machine for Modeling the Bead Geometry in Gas Metal Arc Welding Process

Rapid prototyping (RP) methods are used for production easily and quickly of a scale model of a physical part or assembly. Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) is a widespread process used for rapid prototyping of metallic parts. In this process, in order to obtain a desired welding geometry, it is very important to predict the weld bead geometry based on the input process parameters, which are voltage...
